Zach grew up in Independence, Missouri and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia where he served as an intern to a state representative in the Missouri General Assembly. Zach was also very involved in the Mizzou Army ROTC program and was honored as the unit’s Cadet Sergeant Major and Cadet Commander. He also received the Distinguished Military Graduate and George C. Marshall awards upon graduation.

After graduating from Mizzou, Zach served four years on active Army duty. Achieving the rank of Captain before leaving active duty, he served as an M1A1 tank platoon leader and company executive officer and graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School.

After leaving the Army, Zach attended the University of Missouri School of Law where he obtained his Juris Doctorate and LL.M. (Tax) degrees. In law school, Zach was a member of the UMKC Law Review and Urban Lawyer journal staffs, and managed the UMKC Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site.

Following law school, Zach worked for six years at H&R Block’s Kansas City headquarters where he developed training courses and research materials used by thousands of H&R Block tax professionals worldwide. He also assisted hundreds of H&R Block tax professionals complete accurate tax returns when they requested advice on difficult and unique client issues. For three years, Zach also worked as one of the company’s in-house tax counsel, ensuring that the company complied with the difficult tax laws and regulations applicable to multi-national corporations. During his time at H&R Block, Zach gained knowledge and experience in many areas of tax law: business acquisitions, installment sales, compensation planning, federal and state audit defense, state sales and income taxes, and international transfer and reorganizations.
